SUBURBAN DREAMS (1962-65)

Back to Gallery

The work on this page coincided with Ian’s marriage to Anna, the birth of their children and a move from metropolitan Chiswick to suburban Shepperton on the outskirts of London. The work possibly reflects a change in Ian from bachelorhood to married family man, with the inherent responsibilities.

Themes in the work relate to life in the suburbs, to domestic chores, daily grind and everyday objects. Ian sketched constantly, as a source for his paintings and prints. He also collected images from elsewhere to re-combine into a new picture. For example, the figure in ‘Semi-Tudor’ is based on a print of the Infanta Isabella Clara Eugenia by Jan Muller. Some of his drawing style from the ‘Fragments’ series continued in this work, as does the combination of seemingly unrelated objects.

Sometimes humour enters the work, such as ‘Semi-Tudor’ and ‘Love Puzzle’. Other works have sadder themes, such as ‘Suburban Tragedy’.
